Tiffany Richardson, Disaster Relief Fraud, Louisiana 2024

A Chalmette woman has been sentenced to prison for her role in a disaster relief fraud scheme following the 2013 Oklahoma tornadoes.

Tiffany Richardson, 30, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan to one month in prison followed by seven months of home confinement. Richardson pleaded guilty to one count of disaster relief fraud.

According to court records, Richardson applied for disaster assistance from the Small Business Administration after the tornadoes struck Oklahoma. However, she falsely claimed that she had a primary residence in an affected area, when in fact, she lived in Chalmette, Louisiana.

As a result of her false claims, Richardson fraudulently received disaster relief benefits from the Small Business Administration. She was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $20,900 to the victim, the Small Business Administration.

Richardson was sentenced to two years of supervised release in addition to her prison and home confinement terms. The U.S. Attorney’s Office praised the work of the Small Business Administration, Office of Inspector General, and the Department of Homeland Security for their investigation into the matter.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward J. Rivera led the prosecution of Richardson’s case. Richardson’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of honest and accurate reporting in the wake of natural disasters.

By reporting false information, Richardson was able to defraud the system and receive benefits to which she was not entitled. Her case highlights the need for vigilance and oversight in the administration of disaster relief funds.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser praised the agencies involved in the investigation, saying ‘Their work is crucial in ensuring that those who would seek to take advantage of disaster relief funds are held accountable.’
