Man Charged With Third Degree Burglary in Timber Lake

A Timber Lake, South Dakota, resident has been hit with a serious crime. Chapen Kraft, 18, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Third Degree Burglary.

Kraft was indicted on February 11, 2015, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on February 13, 2014. He pleaded not guilty to the Indictment.

The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 5 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The Indictment alleges that between September 15 and October 11, 2014, Kraft unlawfully entered and remained in a barn and storage building near Timber Lake, with the intent to commit a larceny.

Kraft was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set. With a potential 5-year sentence looming, Kraft may find himself facing a lengthy prison term if found guilty.
