Timothy Vasher, Narcotics & Firearms, Shreveport LA, 2022
SHREVEPORT, LA – A routine traffic stop in DeSoto Parish spiraled into a major narcotics and firearms bust, landing 20-year-old Timothy DeWayne Vasher of Shreveport with a decade in federal prison. U.S. District Judge S. Maurice Hicks, Jr. handed down the 120-month sentence (10 years) followed by 3 years of supervised release after Vasher was convicted of possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possessing firearms during a drug trafficking offense.
The bust unfolded on August 11, 2021, when DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s deputies pulled over Vasher’s vehicle. The smell of marijuana wafted from inside, giving deputies probable cause to search. The search revealed baggies containing 3-5 grams of marijuana tucked inside the center console. But the real firepower was in the trunk: a loaded Smith & Wesson Model M&P AR-15 pistol equipped with a high-capacity 50-round drum, and a loaded Glock Model 21 .45 pistol. The AR-15, sporting an 8 7/8-inch barrel and 23 7/8-inch overall length, hadn’t been registered as required, and ATF agents later confirmed it was stolen.
Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) quickly determined both firearms were operational. The marijuana seized was tested and confirmed by the North Louisiana Crime Lab. This wasn’t just a pot possession case; it was a clear indication of a dangerous combination of drugs and illegal weaponry. Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Aaron Crawford prosecuted the case, solidifying the connection between the narcotics and the illegal firearms.
Meanwhile, a separate case brought another Shreveport resident down. Misty Michell Moran, also known as Misty Ott, 46, also received a 120-month federal prison sentence and 3 years of supervised release for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Moran’s operation involved hauling large quantities of meth from the Dallas, Texas area into Shreveport, a pattern flagged by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Louisiana State Police troopers caught Moran speeding on February 21, 2022, leading to a traffic stop. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered approximately 998 grams of pure methamphetamine, a SCCY Model CPX-2 9mm handgun secured to the dashboard, and over $2,000 in cash. The DEA Crime Lab confirmed the potency of the seized narcotics. Like Vasher’s case, this was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Aaron Crawford.
These two sentences send a strong message: trafficking narcotics and illegally possessing firearms in the Shreveport/Bossier City area will be met with significant federal penalties. The collaborative efforts of the ATF, DEA, DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Louisiana State Police, coupled with the work of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, are clearly aimed at disrupting these criminal networks and keeping dangerous weapons and drugs off the streets.
