A 58-year-old Toledo man is facing federal charges for grossly negligent operation of a vessel, according to a recent filing by the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
Mark T. Vandeilen, 58, was charged with grossly negligent operation of a vessel after a criminal information was filed against him, said Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
The investigation into Vandeilen’s actions was conducted by the United States Coast Guard, which is also handling the prosecution of the case along with Special Assistant United States Attorney Benedict S. Gullo and Assistant United States Attorney Noah P. Hood.
The charges against Vandeilen come with serious consequences, including a sentence that will be determined by the court after reviewing factors unique to the case, such as the defendant’s prior criminal record and role in the offense.
If convicted, Vandeilen’s sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and will likely be less than the maximum in most cases, according to the United States Attorney’s office.
