Toronto Man Caught with $620K in Ecstasy

Buffalo, NY – In a major blow to the region’s illicit narcotics trade, Anthony Ighodaro, a 32-year-old Toronto man, has pleaded guilty to importing a staggering 31,128 ecstasy pills into the United States.

The pills, which had a street value of over $620,000, were discovered on July 25, 2010, by Customs and Border Protection officers at the Peace Bridge Port of Entry. Ighodaro was attempting to enter the country in a rental vehicle, but inconsistencies in his story raised suspicions.

During a secondary inspection, a narcotics detection K-9 sniffed out six duct-taped bundles hidden in the rear bumper of the car. The bundles were found to contain the ecstasy pills, which were believed to be destined for the Atlanta, Georgia area.

Ighodaro’s guilty plea comes just one day before he was set to go to trial on the charges. The plea is the result of a joint investigation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, and Customs and Border Protection.

The maximum penalty for Ighodaro’s crime is 20 years in prison, a $1,000,000 fine, or both. Sentencing is scheduled for April 21, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. before Judge Richard J. Arcara.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas S. Duszkiewicz and Carol G. Bridge are handling the case. The investigation was led by Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero and Randy Howe, Acting Director of Field Operations.

This guilty plea is a significant victory in the ongoing fight against narcotics trafficking in the region. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
