Canadian Man Pleads Guilty to Ecstasy Import Conspiracy
A 35-year-old Canadian man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to import ecstasy pills into the United States, according to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr.
Richard Dixon, of Toronto, Ontario, was observed by Customs and Border Protection officers wandering around the CBP administration building at the Lewiston Bridge Port of Entry in Lewiston, N.Y. on September 17, 2012. It was during this investigation that law enforcement officers discovered seven duct-taped bundles wrapped in clothing containing approximately 34,000 ecstasy pills.
The pills, which were found inside a bag belonging to Dixon, were destined for the Atlanta, Georgia area. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $1,000,000 fine, or both.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Catherine Baumgarten, who is handling the case, stated that the investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero and Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of James Engleman, Director of Field Operations.
The plea is the result of a lengthy investigation, and sentencing is scheduled for October 28, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. before Judge Richard J. Arcara.
Dixon’s guilty plea marks a significant blow to international drug traffickers, and law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to disrupt the flow of illicit substances into the United States.
