Newark, N.J. – The grim tale of Jose Torres, 46, from Middlesex County, reached a harrowing conclusion as he was sentenced today to 311 months in prison for persuading, inducing, and enticing women into interstate prostitution. This sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
Following a six-day trial before U.S. District Judge Brian R. Martinotti, Torres was convicted on all four counts of the second superseding indictment. The case unfolded in Newark federal court, where Judge Martinotti imposed the severe penalty.
According to documents and evidence presented during the trial, from May 2015 to October 2019, Torres exploited his position to lure female victims, predominantly commercial sex workers, into New Jersey under false pretenses. He promised substantial payments, only to renounce these promises once the women arrived. Torres subjected the victims to violence, including assault and rape, when they demanded payment.
In addition to the lengthy prison term, Torres was sentenced to 15 years of supervised release and ordered to pay a $5,000 special assessment for trafficking. U.S. Attorney Sellinger credited the diligent work of FBI and Homeland Security Investigations Newark agents for the successful investigation that led to this outcome.
Represented by Bruce P. Keller, Special Counsel to the U.S. Attorney, Torres faced a government that was determined to bring justice to his victims. The sentence underscores the severity with which the law treats human trafficking and sex crimes.
