Delaware Town Lands $125,000 for Law Enforcement Hiring

The Town of Smyrna in Delaware has been awarded $125,000 in grant funding through the COPS Hiring Program (CHP), a competitive award program aimed at reducing crime and advancing public safety through community policing.

The funding, which is part of a larger $139 million grant package announced by the Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, will enable the Town of Smyrna to hire additional law enforcement professionals and support community-oriented policing programs.

‘We are committed to providing police departments with the resources needed to help ensure community safety and build community trust,’ Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement.

The COPS Hiring Program has invested more than $14 billion since its creation in 1994, with grants awarded to over 13,000 state, local, and Tribal law enforcement agencies to fund the hiring and redeployment of more than 135,000 officers.

Of the 183 agencies awarded grants, approximately half will focus on building legitimacy and trust between law enforcement and communities, while 41 agencies will seek to address high rates of gun violence, and 21 will focus on other areas of violence.

The Town of Smyrna’s award is part of a larger effort to invest in prevention and intervention programs in communities across the country. The funding is expected to have a significant impact on community safety and trust in law enforcement.
