ALBANY, NEW YORK – A Troy man is looking at serious time after being indicted on federal drug charges. Melvin Nelson, 39, was arraigned Friday on accusations he possessed and intended to distribute a significant quantity of crack cocaine, according to authorities.
The feds say Nelson was busted on June 26, 2018, allegedly with over 28 grams of the hard stuff. United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and James N. Hendricks, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany FBI field office, made the announcement, signaling a continued crackdown on drug trafficking in the Capital District.
Nelson appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Christian F. Hummel on Friday, April 26, where conditions for his release were set. These are just charges at this stage, and Nelson is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the indictment paints a grim picture. The FBI’s Capital District Safe Streets Gang Task Force, a coalition of federal, state, and local law enforcement – including the Troy Police Department – conducted the investigation.
If convicted, Nelson faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 5 years behind bars. That’s just the starting point. He could also be slapped with at least 4 years of post-release supervision and a hefty fine of up to $5 million. Sentencing is at the discretion of the judge, taking into account federal guidelines and the specifics of the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ashlyn Miranda and Alicia Suarez are prosecuting the case, promising a full pursuit of justice. This isn’t a slap-on-the-wrist situation; the feds are clearly aiming for a substantial sentence if they can prove their case. The investigation underscores the ongoing efforts to stem the flow of narcotics into upstate New York.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments. Nelson’s next court date has not yet been announced. This indictment serves as a stark reminder that drug trafficking carries severe consequences in the federal system.
