Roman Emilio Rascon Jr., a 36-year-old Tucson man, was sentenced to 78 months in prison for his role in a cocaine distribution conspiracy and firearm possession. On August 11, Rascon appeared before United States District Judge Raner C. Collins, who handed down the sentence. Rascon had previously pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Distribute Cocaine and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime. The sentence is the result of a joint investigation by the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) and multiple law enforcement agencies.
As part of the conspiracy, Rascon distributed more than six kilograms of cocaine and possessed firearms when he distributed the cocaine. In addition to serving over six years in prison, the District Court ordered Rascon to forfeit vehicles, firearms, ammunition, and drug proceeds. The HSTF investigation involved agents and officers from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, United States Marshals Service, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation, and ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations.
The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad. The task force places special emphasis on investigating and prosecuting those engaged in child trafficking or other crimes involving children.
The sentence is a significant blow to drug trafficking operations in Tucson, Arizona. Rascon’s conviction and sentencing demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating drug trafficking and related crimes in the region.
