GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE — Christina D. Carlson, an enrolled member of the Tulalip Tribes, has been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of criminal mistreatment in relation to the tragic death of her 19-month-old daughter and the neglect of her second child, officials announced today.
Carlson is set to appear in U.S. District Court in Seattle at 2:30 PM this afternoon after being transferred to federal custody following the unsealing of a criminal complaint detailing the harrowing events of October 8, 2012.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s report classifies the death as homicide by parental neglect, revealing that the young victim was found unconscious, unresponsive, and covered in urine and feces. The child, who weighed only 19 pounds, also suffered from excoriated skin around the diaper area and a louse-infested hair.
The investigation uncovered that Carlson had been living in a car with her two daughters on the Tulalip Tribal Reservation since mid-September of that year. On the fateful day, Carlson left the girls unattended in the vehicle for over an hour while she used a phone at another residence on the property. When neighbors alerted her to return, she requested they call 9-1-1, as the youngest child was unresponsive.
Second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, while criminal mistreatment is punishable by up to ten years in prison. These charges are merely allegations, and Carlson is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case has been jointly investigated by the Tulalip Tribal Police and the FBI, promising a thorough examination of the tragic circumstances surrounding this young life’s untimely end.
