Denzil Austin Berryman, Sexual Abuse and Strangulation, California 2023

TULSA, Okla. – Denzil Austin Berryman, a 38-year-old man from Tulsa, has been handed a severe sentence for his brutal acts of sexual abuse and assault by strangulation in Indian country.

In January, a federal jury convicted Berryman of the heinous crimes after a harrowing trial. Today, U.S. District Judge Sara E. Hill sentenced him to 210 months imprisonment, followed by 10 years of supervised release. Upon his eventual freedom, Berryman will be a registered sex offender and must pay $5,375 in restitution.

The attack, which led to the charges, occurred in June 2023 when Berryman, amidst a fit of rage, slammed candy down the throat of the victim, attacked her apartment, and threatened her cat. His rage escalated into sexual assault and strangulation after he forced himself upon her. Berryman even continued his assault after the victim passed out.

After the incident, Berryman returned to the victim’s apartment, crying and apologizing. However, he didn’t leave, and his attack resumed. He remains in custody as he awaits transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Berryman is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The FBI and Tulsa Police Department were instrumental in investigating this case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephanie Ihler and Stephen Scaife prosecuted Berryman to his conviction.
