Two Mason City Men Sentenced to Federal Prison for Methamphetamine Distribution
Two men have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a Mason City area methamphetamine distribution conspiracy. Shawn Benedict Zimmerman, 42, of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Shane Lester McRoberts, 28, of Nora Springs, Iowa, each received their prison terms after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.
According to information provided by the United States at the sentencing and change of plea hearings, Zimmerman supplied methamphetamine to McRoberts, who sold methamphetamine for him. During the conspiracy, which occurred between June 2014 and December 2014, McRoberts distributed more than 5 grams of pure methamphetamine.
Zimmerman controlled the operation, and McRoberts was selling methamphetamine sourced by Zimmerman. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jack Lammers and investigated by the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Mason City Police Department, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Zimmerman was sentenced to 188 months’ imprisonment, while McRoberts received 45 months. Both defendants must also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after their prison terms. They were each ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.
There is no parole in the federal system. Both Zimmerman and McRoberts are currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until they can be transported to a federal prison. The case file number is 15-3011.
The sentencing was conducted by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids. The case is a reminder of the ongoing fight against methamphetamine distribution in Iowa and the consequences of engaging in such activities.
