Michael Mason, 21, has been handed a 28-year-and-eight-month sentence for the chilling murders of Brea Moon and Antwuan Roach, which shook Washington, D.C. in 2020. The sentences were announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro on October 31, 2025.

Mason’s crime spree began with the shooting death of Moon on April 7, 2020, at a Southeast Washington gas station. Witness accounts and government evidence paint a harrowing scene where Mason followed Moon in a stolen vehicle before opening fire. Days later, Mason struck again, this time gunning down Roach in Northeast Washington. The May 22, 2020, shooting happened after Mason tracked Roach to Anacostia Road NE.

Joining Pirro in the announcement was Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith, who praised the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies in bringing Mason to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gauri Gopal, Julia Cosans, Sarah Folse, Yasmin Emrani, and Daniel Bromwich, along with former assistants Gregory Kimak and Alec Levy, played pivotal roles in the investigation and prosecution.

The sentences reflect a city that has seen too many lives claimed by violence. The families of Moon and Roach will now find some measure of justice as Mason serves his time behind bars. As for Mason, his actions have put him on a trajectory that will leave an indelible mark on Washington, D.C.’s criminal history.
