Two Montgomery Men Face Human Trafficking Charges

In a significant victory against human trafficking, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama recently secured the convictions of two Montgomery men for operating a human trafficking scheme.

The defendants, William Johnson and James Smith, were found guilty of violating 18 U.S.C. § 1591(a)(1) and (b)(2), which prohibits sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion.

The crimes occurred in Montgomery, Alabama and spanned multiple dates in November 2025. The convictions are a result of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit.

The investigation and prosecution of human trafficking cases are a top priority for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Middle District of Alabama. In recent years, the office has made significant strides in disrupting trafficking networks and bringing traffickers to justice.

“Human trafficking is a brutal crime that preys on the most vulnerable members of our communities,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Kevin Davidson. “Through close coordination with our federal, state, and local partners, we will continue to aggressively pursue traffickers, protect victims and survivors, and ensure that those who profit from exploitation are brought to justice.”

The convictions of William Johnson and James Smith serve as a reminder of the importance of continued efforts to combat human trafficking. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama will continue to work tirelessly to protect victims and disrupt trafficking networks.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, William Johnson and James Smith are currently facing sentencing. The exact date of sentencing has not been disclosed.
