Houma man Michael J. Hebert, 62, has pleaded guilty to receiving and possessing an unregistered firearm. According to court documents, Hebert possessed a Stag Arms Model Stag-15, .223 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a barrel of less than 16 inches in length that was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service- New Orleans Field Division, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U. S. Attorney Loan “Mimi” Nguyen is prosecuting the case.
Hebert faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten years, a fine of $250,000 and three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. Sentencing is scheduled for August 22, 2013.
The guilty plea came after Hebert admitted to receiving and possessing the unregistered firearm. Hebert’s actions have put him at risk of severe penalties, and it remains to be seen how the court will decide his fate.
As the investigation continues, it is clear that Hebert’s actions were serious enough to warrant a federal investigation. The collaboration between the United States Secret Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office was key in bringing Hebert to justice.
Hebert’s case highlights the importance of registering firearms and the consequences of not doing so. The case also underscores the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies in the pursuit of justice.
