A brazen scheme to swipe over $500,000 from the US Postal Service has landed a former employee in the hot seat. Jessica Alires, 46, of Nehalem, Oregon, pleaded guilty to misappropriating postal funds.
Between September 2024 and December 2024, Alires, a USPS employee in Wheeler, Oregon, issued money orders to customers, then voided them in the electronic system. She’d reissue the cash, pocketing the funds. To cover her tracks, Alires falsified records, reporting fake cash and debit payments.
But that wasn’t all – Alires also swiped a credit card in the mail, charging $500 on a money order, and stole a letter containing $200 in cash.
On February 19, 2026, Alires was hit with charges, and now faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. She’s set to be sentenced on October 14, 2026.
As part of her plea deal, Alires will cough up restitution in full. The case is being investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Cardani leading the charge.
