VACAVILLE, CA – James Cargill, 44, of Vacaville, is facing a potential life sentence after a federal grand jury handed down a four-count indictment this week, Acting U.S. Attorney Kimberly A. Sanchez announced. Cargill is accused of turning the quiet Solano County city into a distribution hub for methamphetamine, all while illegally packing heat as a convicted felon.
The charges stem from two separate arrests in 2025. In January, Vacaville Police Department officers took Cargill into custody after discovering he possessed over 500 grams of methamphetamine, a substantial amount indicative of large-scale distribution. Alongside the drugs, officers found a loaded semi-automatic pistol. Cargill’s history, already stained with felony convictions for burglary, evading police, and prior firearm possession, should have been a deterrent – it wasn’t.
Released from custody, Cargill apparently didn’t get the message. Just months later, in May, he was arrested *again* – this time for possessing more methamphetamine and *another* loaded semi-automatic pistol. The pattern paints a clear picture: a repeat offender brazenly disregarding the law and endangering the community.
The investigation, a joint effort between the Vacaville Police Department, Fairfield Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, underscores the coordinated approach needed to tackle persistent criminal activity. Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Campbell will be leading the prosecution, a signal this case is being taken seriously at the federal level.
If convicted on all counts, Cargill faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years behind bars. The maximum statutory penalty? Life in prison. He also stares down a potential $10 million fine. However, the final sentence will ultimately be up to the judge, who will consider statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
It’s crucial to remember that these are only allegations at this stage. James Cargill is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. But the evidence, as presented to the grand jury, suggests a dangerous individual who repeatedly chose criminal activity over compliance with the law, and now faces the serious consequences.
