MINNEAPOLIS – In a stunning turn of events, Nakia Marquire Martin, 31, from St. Paul, Minnesota, has been handed a severe punishment for his criminal actions. Today, he was sentenced to 77 months in prison for being a felon in possession of ammunition, a crime that also earned him an additional 10-month sentence for violating the conditions of his federal supervised release. The judge also ordered three years of further supervised release following his prison term.
According to court documents, on July 5, 2023, Martin, while on federal supervised release stemming from a 2018 firearms conviction, entered a sporting goods store in Woodbury, Minnesota. A female acquaintance and her seven-year-old daughter were also present. The woman purchased a semiautomatic .40-caliber firearm, but it was Martin who walked into the ammunition section, took a box of 50 rounds of .40-caliber ammunition from the shelf, and exited the store without paying.
As a result of prior felony convictions, Martin is legally prohibited from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition. His reckless actions in this case not only endangered the public but also violated his parole conditions.
Martin pleaded guilty on January 4, 2024, to one count of felon in possession of ammunition. U.S. District Court Judge Ann D. Montgomery presided over the sentencing hearing and delivered the stiff penalty. The sentence for violating supervised release terms was imposed consecutively to his prison term.
This case is a testament to the ongoing collaboration between law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Saint Paul Police Department, which led to Martin’s capture and conviction.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Bejar was instrumental in prosecuting this case, ensuring that justice was served for the public safety violation committed by Nakia Marquire Martin.
