GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Jeffrey Caldwell, 37, of Vallejo, California, was handed a 14-year prison sentence by U.S. District Judge Dena Coggins for being a felon in possession of ammunition, the Department of Justice announced.
Caldwell’s conviction stems from an incident on December 16, 2024, when police were called to a Vallejo motel where Caldwell was firing a gun. The standoff that followed lasted over 12 hours before Caldwell surrendered. A search of his room revealed a ghost gun hidden in a bathroom wall.
Caldwell has a lengthy rap sheet, including convictions for assault, burglary, and stalking. He is banned from owning firearms or ammunition due to his prior felonies.
The case was investigated by the FBI, Vallejo Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Charles Campbell and R. Alexander Cárdenas prosecuted the case.
This sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which focuses on reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
U.S. Attorney Eric Grant emphasized the importance of PSN’s efforts, stating that such programs are crucial for fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting organizations to prevent violence, and strategically enforcing laws to keep neighborhoods safe.
