Senior U.S. District Judge John Antoon II has sentenced Alvis Alexander Briceno-Yajures, 24, a Venezuelan national, to eight years and nine months in federal prison for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by an alien illegally or unlawfully in the United States.
Briceno-Yajures pleaded guilty on May 8, 2025. According to court documents, he committed a violent robbery at gunpoint in Daytona Beach on July 30, 2024. The victim was dragged down stairs and attempted to be forced into a car with two accomplices before a bystander intervened.
Within hours of this incident, Briceno-Yajures and his accomplices targeted another victim in Holly Hill, pointing firearms at her and her friend as they took the victim’s car. Briceno-Yajures was arrested shortly thereafter by Daytona Beach Police Department officers, who found a loaded firearm concealed in his underwear.
This case was a joint investigation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ERO, ATF, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Daytona Beach Police Department, and Holly Hill Police Department. It was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Del Mastro.
The sentence is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence in neighborhoods. The program was strengthened in 2021 with a focus on fostering community trust, supporting preventive organizations, strategic law enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
