Heroin and Crack Cocaine Distribution Lands Brooklyn Man in Prison
A 25-year-old Brooklyn, New York man has been sentenced to 29 months in prison for his role in distributing heroin and crack cocaine in the Fair Haven, Vermont area.
Ras Foster, who previously pled guilty to the offense, was sentenced by Chief United States District Court Judge Christina Reiss. The offense involved selling heroin and crack cocaine in Fair Haven in March and April of 2014, with one of the sales taking place in the parking lot of the Stewart’s convenience store.
The United States Attorney’s Office had requested a sentence of 37 months imprisonment, which is the low end of the advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. However, Judge Reiss ultimately sentenced Foster to 29 months, which is still a significant consequence for the crime.
In sentencing Foster, Judge Reiss noted that heroin is “ravaging the community” and “enslaving” addicts by selling them drugs. She also emphasized the need for significant consequences for those who come to Vermont to sell drugs.
The investigation into Foster’s activities was conducted by the Vermont State Police Drug Task Force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The United States is represented in this matter by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Perella, while Foster is represented by William Christman, Esq. of St. Albans.
The maximum sentence for the drug distribution offense to which Foster was convicted is 20 years. With his 29-month sentence, Foster will also face three years of supervised release after his prison term.
Foster’s conviction and sentence serve as a reminder of the serious consequences of drug trafficking in Vermont. As the state continues to grapple with the opioid epidemic, it is clear that those who engage in this type of activity will be held accountable.
As the Grimy Times continues to shine a light on the issue of drug trafficking in Vermont, we will keep a close eye on cases like Foster’s and the impact they have on our community.
