Jose Maria Hernandez Bautista, a 43-year-old illegal alien from Mexico, was sentenced to 2 years and 9 months in prison for using a stolen identity to vote in US elections in Virginia. Hernandez Bautista, who had been deported three times, used the victim’s identity to obtain driver’s licenses, Social Security cards, and a US passport, and even voted in the 2016 and 2020 federal elections. The crimes occurred between 2013 and 2021 in various locations, including Alabama, North Carolina, and Virginia.
Hernandez Bautista’s scheme involved using the victim’s personal identifying information to apply for and receive identification cards and driver’s licenses in multiple states. He also used the victim’s identity to register to vote in Virginia and cast ballots in two federal elections. Additionally, he took out a line of credit in the victim’s name to purchase a vehicle and received multiple traffic tickets under the victim’s name.
The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General. Special Assistant US Attorney Nicholas Bolzman prosecuted the case, which is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to combat illegal immigration and transnational crime.
Hernandez Bautista’s sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes, which involved not only identity theft but also voter fraud and other offenses. The case highlights the importance of protecting the integrity of the electoral process and preventing illegal aliens from exploiting vulnerabilities in the system.
