Courtney Melissa Hruska, Wire Fraud, Virginia 2023

⏱ 2 min read

Courtney Melissa Hruska, a 40-year-old former congressional staffer from Alexandria, VA, pleaded guilty to wire fraud after misusing her former employer’s bank account to pay her own credit card bills. Hruska worked on the staff of a U.S. House of Representatives member from August 2015 to January 2022, during which time she was entrusted with the member’s personal credit card and bank account information. After leaving her position, Hruska retained the member’s financial information without authorization and used it to make payments towards her own credit card bills on 10 separate occasions between August 19, 2023, and July 30, 2024.

The scheme resulted in a loss of at least $22,865.07 to the Representative, with less than nine percent of the stolen funds recovered due to the delay in discovery. Hruska’s actions were investigated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General, and she is now scheduled to be sentenced on June 23, facing up to 20 years in prison.

Hruska’s case is a striking example of the abuse of trust and power that can occur in the highest levels of government. The fact that she was able to retain her former employer’s financial information without authorization and use it for her own gain raises serious questions about the security measures in place to protect sensitive information.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia is handling the prosecution, with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jake Drucker leading the case. As Hruska awaits sentencing, the full extent of her punishment remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: her actions have consequences that will be felt for years to come.
