Cocaine Trafficking Ring Busted in Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA – 1/15/2014
A long-standing investigation into a cocaine trafficking operation in Indianapolis has resulted in the indictment of 11 individuals, including Wade Havvard, 36, and Larry Eugene Coe, 39. The operation, code-named ‘Operation Family Ties,’ was conducted by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with assistance from the Indiana State Police and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
Hogsett stated, ‘The alleged conduct in this case is unacceptable for our community. We seek to impose the harshest penalties on those who refuse to observe even the most basic assumptions of civil society.’
The indictment charges the defendants with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance, with some facing mandatory minimum sentences and higher maximum prison sentences than they originally faced in state court. If convicted, some of the defendants face a minimum penalty of 10 years to life, while others face 20 years to life. Three defendants face mandatory life sentences without the possibility of parole.
The investigation, which began in March 2010, culminated in the arrest of over 40 individuals in early January 2014. At that time, more than 6 kilograms of cocaine was confiscated, along with marijuana, nine guns, six vehicles, and approximately $198,000 in cash.
Hogsett praised the law enforcement efforts, saying, ‘I want to thank all of our law enforcement partners, particularly the DEA, the Indiana State Police, and the IMPD, for their dedication to taking these drugs off the street, and, therefore, making our neighborhoods safer.’
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Brady. An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
