Native Mob Gang Members Found Guilty of Racketeering, Attempted Murder
MINNEAPOLIS— A federal jury in Minnesota has found three members of the Native Mob street gang guilty of racketeering and attempted murder charges. The guilty verdicts come after a nearly two-month trial in federal court.
The jury found Wakinyon Wakan McArthur, age 34, guilty on six counts, including racketeering; William Earl Morris, age 25, guilty on four counts; and Anthony Francis Cree, age 26, guilty on six counts, including racketeering and attempted murder.
The defendants were charged in a superseding indictment on July 19, 2012. They are among 25 members of the Native Mob who were indicted for their involvement in the gang’s criminal activity.
The evidence presented at trial proved that the defendants conspired to conduct criminal activity through the Native Mob, a regional criminal gang that originated in Minneapolis in the early 1990s. Members of the gang engage in drug trafficking, assault, robbery, and murder, and membership is estimated at 200.
The Native Mob is one of the largest and most violent American Indian gangs in the US, according to the 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment. The gang is most active in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The guilty verdicts are a significant blow to the Native Mob’s operations and are expected to send a message to other gang members that they will be held accountable for their crimes. The defendants face penalties of up to life in prison for their convictions.
