Wanblee Man Pleads Not Guilty to Rape Charges
A 39-year-old man from Wanblee, South Dakota, has been accused of using force to engage in sexual acts with a female who was physically incapable of declining participation in May 2013.
According to the indictment, Jason Poor Bear, 39, committed Aggravated Sexual Abuse by Force and Sexual Abuse on multiple occasions. He was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 17, 2013, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on February 11, 2014.
Poor Bear pleaded not guilty to the charges, which carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine, and a lifetime of supervised release. The investigation into the incident is ongoing and is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman is prosecuting the case, which is still in its early stages. Poor Bear was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, but a trial date has not been set.
It’s worth noting that the charges against Poor Bear are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The case highlights the importance of vigorous investigation and prosecution of sex crimes, which can have a profound impact on the victims and their families.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the community is awaiting the outcome of the case. The Wanblee community is urged to come forward with any information that may aid in the investigation.
The alleged incident occurred in May 2013, and the charges are believed to have been committed using force and an object. The case is a sobering reminder of the severity of sex crimes and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
