Methamphetamine Distribution Ring Uncovered in Wanblee
A 29-year-old woman from Wanblee, South Dakota has been charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in the state and elsewhere, according to a federal indictment.
Shy Bettelyoun, 29, was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 20, 2013 for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance, a charge that carries a penalty of 5 to 40 years in prison and/or a $5,000,000 fine.
The alleged conspiracy took place from August 2009 to February 2013, during which time law enforcement agencies say Bettelyoun worked with others to distribute methamphetamine in South Dakota and beyond.
Bettelyoun’s involvement in the alleged conspiracy came to light as part of an investigation by the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Rapid City Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ted L. McBride is prosecuting the case, which is still in its early stages. Bettelyoun has pleaded not guilty to the indictment and has been released on bond pending trial.
The trial date has been set for June 11, 2013. While the indictment is merely an accusation, Bettelyoun is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
The alleged methamphetamine distribution ring has sparked concerns about the growing problem of methamphetamine use and trafficking in the region.
