WANBLEE, SD – A Wanblee woman was sentenced to a slap on the wrist for her role in a massive marijuana distribution ring.
Anita Lucine Brown, 59, was handed a 1-year probation sentence and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund for her part in conspiring to distribute more than 1 kilogram of marijuana.
Brown, who allowed her sons to sell marijuana from her home, was given the lenient sentence on January 2, 2014, by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken of the U.S. District Court.
Brown was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 24, 2012, for her role in the conspiracy, and later pleaded guilty on October 4, 2013.
According to court documents, Brown’s sons sold marijuana from her home between May 2010 and July 2012, with Brown receiving marijuana in exchange for allowing them to use her property.
The case was investigated as part of Operation Eagle Eye, a controlled substances investigation conducted by the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ted L. McBride prosecuted the case, which some are calling a miscarriage of justice given the severity of the crime.
Brown’s sentence has raised eyebrows in the community, with many questioning why she was not given a harsher punishment for her role in the marijuana distribution ring.
