Perpetrator, Child Sexual Abuse, Washington 2023

WASHINGTON – In a chilling case of child sexual abuse, a 60-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison for sexually abusing his seven-year-old great niece. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves on January 26, 2023.

The perpetrator, whose name is withheld to protect the identity of the victim, pleaded guilty in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia to a charge of second-degree child sexual abuse. The defendant faces an additional ten years of supervised release following his prison term and must register as a sex offender for a decade.

According to government evidence, the heinous act occurred in November 2018 when the defendant was staying at the apartment of his niece, the mother of the victim. One evening, while on the couch, the defendant subjected the child to an unimaginable horror by touching her genitalia with his hand. At the time, the defendant was already a registered sex offender and was under supervised release for a previous child sexual abuse case.

U.S. Attorney Graves commended the Metropolitan Police Department’s Youth and Family Services Division for their diligent investigation. He also expressed gratitude to the D.C. Children’s Advocacy Center for their support in aiding victims of child sexual abuse. Graves acknowledged the efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Victim/Witness Advocates Tracey Owusu and Maria Garcia, Paralegal Specialist Cynthia Muhammad, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marco Crocetti and Bonnie Thompson, who tirelessly investigated and prosecuted this case.

This sentence sends a stark message that child sexual abuse will not be tolerated in Washington, D.C., and serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to protect our most vulnerable citizens.
