A 41-year-old Waterbury man has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for his role in a cocaine distribution ring and for possessing loaded firearms, the Grimy Times has learned.
Alejandro Velez pleaded guilty in March 2021 to charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine base and 500 grams or more of cocaine, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The charges were brought after Waterbury police made two controlled purchases of cocaine from Velez in January 2020, followed by a search of his residence and vehicle.
On January 29, 2020, police arrested Velez and found more than 200 grams of cocaine, quantities of crack cocaine and marijuana, and approximately $5,900 in cash at his residence. A search of his car revealed approximately 840 grams of cocaine, two loaded firearms, gun magazines, and five boxes of ammunition.
Velez’s criminal history includes convictions for felony drug and firearm offenses, which is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Natasha Freismuth. Velez is currently out on bond but is required to report to prison on August 25, 2021. The matter was investigated by the Waterbury Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Velez’s sentencing comes as a result of a long-term investigation into his activities. The case highlights the ongoing struggle against narcotics distribution and gun violence in the Waterbury area.
