Waterloo, IA – In a decisive blow against drug trafficking in the area, Adis Vretenarevic, 30, was sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in a massive drug conspiracy. Vretenarevic, who called Waterloo home during the crime, pleaded guilty on March 21, 2025, to one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.
From August 2022 through January 2024, Vretenarevic was deeply involved in the distribution of large quantities of marijuana, with intentions to further disseminate the drug within Waterloo. During this period, he funneled thousands of dollars in drug proceeds into a bank account linked to the drug trafficking organization he was part of.
Compounding his criminal activities, Vretenarevic had been on federal supervision for possession of a firearm by a drug user at the time of the conspiracy. United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams presided over the sentencing in Cedar Rapids, where Vretenarevic received a 60-month sentence and was ordered to serve a five-year term of supervised release following his prison term. The federal system does not offer parole for Vretenarevic.
Currently held in U.S. Marshal’s custody until transportation to a federal prison can be arranged, Vretenarevic faces the consequences of his actions without the possibility of early release. Assistant United States Attorney Nicole L. Nagin prosecuted the case, and it was investigated by a coalition of law enforcement agencies, including the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Homeland Security Investigations, Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Denver Iowa Police Department, Fullerton California Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The investigation was carried out under the case file number 24-CR-02050-004 at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. Follow the latest in federal crime news by following @USAO_NDIA on X.
