Casey Lee Smith, Child Exploitation via Kik, Indiana 2022

EVANSVILLE, IN — Casey Lee Smith, a 48-year-old registered sex offender from Evansville, has been sentenced to 17.5 years in federal prison, plus 10 years of supervised release, for distributing sexually explicit material involving minors via the Kik messaging app.

Court documents reveal that in January 2022, the Evansville Police Department received a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, alerting them to Smith’s uploads of child sexual abuse material on Kik. The files depicted prepubescent minors and sadistic or masochistic conduct.

Upon searching Smith’s cellphone, investigators found 95 images and videos of child sexual abuse material that had been accessed by him, including some involving infants. Additionally, they discovered the Kik application, which Smith had failed to disclose on his sex offender registration information, a legal requirement.

Smith has been a registered sex offender since 2003 following felony convictions for Child Exploitation and Possession of Child Pornography. U.S. Attorney Tom Wheeler emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, “This dangerous criminal used Kik to share the horrific abuse of the most vulnerable victims.”

FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O’Malley added, “Every file this defendant shared represented the ongoing abuse of a real child. He chose to traffic in the sexual abuse of children, and now he will spend years behind bars.” The investigation was conducted by the FBI and Evansville Police Department, with the sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge Richard L. Young.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse online. For more information on Project Safe Childhood, visit www.justice.gov/psc.
