Unlawful Taking of Migratory Birds and Lacey Act Violations
A 52-year-old Watertown man has been charged with Unlawful Taking of Migratory Birds and Lacey Act Violations, according to a federal indictment. Roger Meyer appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on November 8, 2013, and pled not guilty to the charge.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 1 year of imprisonment and/or a $100,000 fine, 1 year of supervised release and an additional year of supervised release upon revocation, and a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The charges are merely accusations, and Meyer is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the case.
Meyer was released on bond pending trial, which has not been set. The charges were filed on October 30, 2013.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office warns that the public should be vigilant and report any suspicious wildlife activity to the authorities.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working closely with local law enforcement agencies to crack down on wildlife poaching and trafficking.
