A Minneapolis man has been convicted of possessing a stolen firearm, according to a guilty plea entered in federal court. Wesley Rayvon Johnson, 29, pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen firearm in a case involving shots fired at a Taco Bell on Broadway Avenue in Minneapolis.
On August 20, 2020, officers with the Minneapolis Police Department responded to shots fired at the fast-food restaurant. Upon arrival, officers observed several individuals and vehicles fleeing the scene, including a white Chevy Impala driven by Johnson. Johnson sped through residential streets and onto I-94, traveling in the wrong direction before crashing into another vehicle.
Johnson exited the Chevy Impala and threw a firearm into a storm drain. Officers were able to remove the grate from the storm drain and recover a Glock 23 Gen. 4, .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol, which had previously been reported stolen. Johnson admitted that he knew the firearm was likely stolen because he bought it on the street without filling out any paperwork.
According to court documents, Johnson is also a convicted felon and is therefore prohibited from possessing firearms. The case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the Minneapolis Police Department and Metro Transit.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Amber M. Brennan. Johnson’s plea agreement is a significant development in the case, and he is expected to face consequences for his actions.
As a convicted felon, Johnson is prohibited from possessing firearms. His guilty plea to possession of a stolen firearm is a serious offense, and he may face significant penalties as a result.
