Local Man Charged with Heinous Crimes
A 36-year-old Wichita man has been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse and one count of producing child pornography after allegedly using force to make two teenage girls submit to sexual acts with him. The victims, who were between 12 and 17 years old at the time of the assaults, were assaulted on multiple occasions, with the most recent incidents occurring on the McConnell Air Force Base.
According to court records, Random Shane Smith used a cell phone camera to take photos of some of the assaults. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison.
The FBI and the Air Force OSI investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart is prosecuting.
The indictment merely contains allegations of criminal conduct, and Smith is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Detailed in the indictment are the specific allegations against Smith, including the use of force to make the victims submit to sexual acts.
The investigation into Smith‘s actions was a collaborative effort between the FBI and the Air Force OSI, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in bringing perpetrators of heinous crimes to justice.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting our children from predators such as Smith.
