WICHITA, KAN. – A chilling tale of terror unfolded in federal court today as 22-year-old Brandon V. Wells faced charges for two heinous armed robberies at auto parts stores.
The Wichita native, Brandon V. Wells, was slammed with two counts of commercial robbery and two counts of brandishing a firearm during a robbery, according to U.S. Attorney Tom Beall.
Court records paint a grim picture of Wells’ alleged February 6, 2017, crime spree. That day, armed with a handgun, he joined an accomplice in robbing O’Reilly Auto Parts at 3109 E. Pawnee in Wichita. The gunman terrorized employees before escaping with cash, leaving behind his partner.
But justice caught up quickly. Two Wichita police officers who had responded to the robbery call set up surveillance at a nearby location. Their vigilance paid off when they apprehended Wells as he exited another O’Reilly’s Auto Parts Store, 4818 E. Lincoln. Although one suspect managed to flee, Wells was brought to justice.
Wells now faces a staggering sentence of up to 45 years in federal prison and fines totaling $500,000 if convicted on all charges. His brush with the law includes penalties of up to 20 years for each robbery charge and mandatory minimums of seven and 25 years for brandishing charges, respectively.
The Wichita Police Department, FBI, and Safe Streets Task Force played pivotal roles in this investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch is prosecuting the case with unwavering determination. As always, defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and these indictments only contain allegations of criminal conduct.
