Ohio Woman Sentenced for Money Laundering Conspiracy

A Dublin, Ohio woman has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for her role in a money laundering conspiracy, according to a recent court order.

Marsha Parenteau, 66, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Michael H. Watson for her involvement in a scheme to launder nearly $19 million in fraudulently obtained loans against a personal residence. The loans were obtained using the home of Thomas Parenteau, Marsha’s husband and a convicted felon.

As part of her sentence, Parenteau was also ordered to serve a three-year term of supervised release after her prison term and to pay restitution. Additionally, the court ordered her to forfeit a vacant lot in the Wedgewood golf community in Dublin, which was purchased with some of the illegally obtained funds.

The court also ordered the government to seize Parenteau’s personal belongings stored at two storage garages and the home of a friend, and to sell the belongings at auction to pay towards the restitution judgment.

Pamela McCarty, a co-conspirator of Parenteau, was sentenced to 24 months in prison for conspiring to commit tax fraud, money laundering, and bank fraud. McCarty, a real estate agent, admitted to conspiring with Thomas Parenteau, Marsha Parenteau, and others to launder unlawful proceeds generated from more than $6 million in fraudulently obtained loans against a personal residence.

McCarty’s cooperation with the government, including wearing a recording device and taping conversations with her co-conspirators, was praised by investigators. The case was prosecuted by Tax Division trial attorneys Richard Rolwing and Sean O’Connell.

A spokesperson for the IRS Criminal Investigation said the case highlighted the importance of cooperation in bringing those responsible for financial crimes to justice.
