Yuny Hurtado Rodriguez, Gas Skimming, Albany NY, 2023
ALBANY, NEW YORK – A Miami-area man is headed to federal prison after admitting his central role in a sophisticated, nationwide gas station skimming scheme. Yuny Hurtado Rodriguez, 34, of Cutler Bay, Florida, received a 57-month sentence today for his involvement in an access device fraud conspiracy that stretched from 2016 to 2019.
Rodriguez wasn’t a lone operator. According to court documents, he worked with accomplices to manufacture and deploy undetectable skimming devices inside gas pumps across multiple states, including Albany, Broome, and Montgomery Counties in New York. These devices surreptitiously captured credit and debit card information from unsuspecting customers as they fueled up.
The stolen data wasn’t just collected – it was exploited. Rodriguez and his crew used the compromised information to create counterfeit credit and debit cards, which were then used to purchase money orders, gift cards, and straight-up cash. The scheme proved remarkably lucrative, raking in a staggering $606,000 in illicit gains, the full amount of which Rodriguez has agreed to forfeit as part of his plea deal.
The investigation, a joint effort spearheaded by the FBI’s Albany Field Office and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Boston Division, exposed a network of criminals exploiting a vulnerability in everyday transactions. The FBI received assistance from its field offices in Miami and Pittsburgh, alongside the USPIS Miami Division, and crucially, the U.S. Secret Service Miami Field Office, highlighting the broad reach of the operation.
Rodriguez initially pleaded guilty on December 30, 2020. In addition to the 57-month prison sentence handed down by Senior United States District Judge Gary L. Sharpe, Rodriguez will also serve a 3-year term of supervised release following his incarceration. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Belliss, who successfully brought the perpetrators to justice.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present threat of financial fraud and the sophisticated methods criminals employ to steal personal information. Authorities urge consumers to remain vigilant, regularly monitor their bank and credit card statements, and report any suspicious activity immediately. The Grimy Times will continue to follow developments in federal fraud cases, exposing the individuals and networks profiting from exploitation.
