Zachary Sizemore, Stealing and Selling Night Vision Technology, New York 2016

In a shocking case of military corruption, Zachary Sizemore, a 24-year-old active-duty Air Force member, pleaded guilty to stealing and selling night vision technology worth over $130,000. Sizemore, who was stationed at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, sold the stolen devices on online marketplaces, raking in approximately $86,000.

According to court filings, Sizemore stole night vision goggles and mini-thermal monoculars from the United States military between July 2013 and November 2016. He then created online postings for the stolen items, selling dozens of them to unsuspecting buyers. The Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) has identified over $130,000 in losses attributable to Sizemore’s theft.

Sizemore’s guilty plea came before Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn. The defendant faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison when he is sentenced on June 29, 2017.

The case was announced by Bridget M. Rohde, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York; Leigh-Alistair Barzey, Special Agent-in-Charge for the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS); and Angel M. Melendez, Special Agent-in-Charge for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), New York.

The government’s case is being prosecuted by the Office’s General Crimes Section, with Assistant United States Attorney Nomi D. Berenson in charge of the prosecution and Assistant United States Attorney Tanisha R. Payne in charge of the forfeiture.

Sizemore’s actions not only compromised national security but also undermined the trust and integrity of the military. His guilty plea serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and the severe consequences of corruption within the ranks.
