PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA – APRIL 14, 2008
A Pittsburgh man has been caught red-handed in a brazen scheme to cheat the system, with a guilty plea in federal court to charges of filing false tax returns.
Zenford A. Mitchell, a Pittsburgh man, pleaded guilty to two counts before United States District Judge Donetta W. Ambrose. In a stunning admission, Mitchell revealed that he had deliberately underreported his income from his law practice and from withdrawals from his individual retirement account on his 2006 and 2007 tax returns.
According to court records, Mitchell filed false tax returns on April 14, 2008, for calendar year 2006 and for 2007. The Internal Revenue Service conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Zenford A. Mitchell.
The court was advised that Mitchell’s guilty plea carries a maximum total sentence of three years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both for each count of conviction. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Judge Ambrose scheduled sentencing for June 30, 2014. The case serves as a stark reminder that tax evasion will not be tolerated and those who attempt to cheat the system will face the full force of the law.
