Armed Carjacking in West Philadelphia Lands 24-Year-Old Behind Bars
A brazen daylight carjacking in the Spruce Hill neighborhood of West Philadelphia has resulted in a lengthy prison sentence for the perpetrator. Zyair Dangerfield-Hill, 24, of Philadelphia, was sentenced to 199 months in prison and five years of supervised release for the armed carjacking of a 73-year-old man in April 2021.
The incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on April 21, 2021, when the victim was walking his dog on Pine Street. Dangerfield-Hill and an associate approached the victim, pointed loaded handguns at him, and demanded his car keys, cell phone, and wallet. The victim handed over a $20 bill and his car keys, but the carjackers refused to back down.
A short time later, two other males approached the scene, also pointing their guns at the victim. The four carjackers then jumped into the victim’s vehicle and drove away, with Dangerfield-Hill in the front passenger seat. The Philadelphia Police Department was alerted about the carjacking, and officers arrived on the scene shortly after. They broadcast a description of the victim’s vehicle and the carjackers over police radio, leading to a high-speed chase that ended with the stolen car crashing into yellow metal pillars at 52nd Street and Paschall Avenue.
The defendant was found hiding behind a motorcycle about three and a half blocks from the crash scene. DNA, latent prints, location data, and other evidence subsequently linked him to the crime. ‘Dangerfield-Hill participated in the ambush of an innocent stranger in a brazen daylight carjacking, the victim surrounded by assailants pointing guns and shouting threats,’ said U.S. Attorney David Metcalf. ‘We will not permit armed criminals to prey on people in this city.’
The case was investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI Philadelphia Violent Crimes Task Force, with Assistant United States Attorney J. Jeanette Kang and Special Assistant United States Attorney David Weisberg prosecuting the case. This sentencing serves as a clear warning to anyone considering violent crime in the city: the authorities will find you and bring you to justice.
