Travis Thomas, School Shooting, Washington District of Columbia 2025

WASHINGTON – A 17-year-old from Washington, D.C., Travis Thomas, has pleaded guilty to firing multiple rounds into an elementary school playground and committing armed carjackings, according to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Thomas was charged as an adult under Title 16 for his actions on April 20, 2025, when he discharged over 15 rounds at C.W. Harris Elementary School after an online dispute with a supposed rival crew member.

The shooting left one victim hospitalized with a forehead gunshot wound and a skull fracture, requiring surgery to remove a bullet.

In addition to the school incident, Thomas is also facing charges for two armed carjackings. The first took place on October 30, 2024, at the Safeway grocery store parking garage on 14th Street SE, followed by another on November 17, 2024, in the 1300 block of Massachusetts Avenue SE.

Thomas was taken into custody on April 25, 2025, and remains in detention. Sentencing is set for November 14, 2025, before Judge Neal Kravitz of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

The investigation leading to Thomas’s plea was a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Police Department and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Green, who is prosecuting the case. Both officials were praised by Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department for their work on this high-profile crime.
