BLACKFOOT, SOUTH DAKOTA – In a shocking turn of events, a local resident has been sentenced to serve time behind bars for a heinous crime. Ta-Sunka-Hinz Thunder Hawk, an 18-year-old native of Blackfoot, has been found guilty of Abusive Sexual Contact with a Child and Simple Assault.
A federal grand jury indicted the defendant on two separate cases, with Thunder Hawk pleading guilty to Simple Assault in the first case and Abusive Sexual Contact with a Child in the second.
The crimes were committed in March of 2013, with the Abusive Sexual Contact taking place at a residence near Blackfoot involving a child under the age of 12. In the first case, Thunder Hawk was accused of grabbing a female school employee in a bear hug at the Tiospaye Topa High School, leaving the victim struggling to break free.
The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson handling the prosecution. U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence on October 23, 2013.
As part of the sentence, Thunder Hawk will serve 24 months in custody, followed by 5 years of supervised release. He will also be required to pay a $110 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our children from predators like Thunder Hawk. The U.S. Marshals Service will be taking custody of the defendant to begin serving his sentence.
