$1M Jeep Heist: Kenneth Dwayne Westbrook Charged in Houston Vehicle Theft Scheme
A brazen scheme to steal over $1 million worth of Jeeps and other vehicles has landed a 29-year-old Houston man in hot water. Kenneth Dwayne Westbrook, 29, of Houston, has been charged with orchestrating the massive theft ring, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
According to the charges, Westbrook used social media to recruit individuals to rent vehicles for him, promising payment in return. However, instead of returning the vehicles, he allegedly had them driven to Mexico, leaving renters high and dry.
The scheme, which was repeated with over 25 vehicles, has resulted in a staggering loss of over $1 million. If convicted, Westbrook faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine for each count in the indictment.
The FBI conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tyler White and Michael Chu prosecuting the case. An indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.
Westbrook is set to make his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Christina Bryan at 2 p.m. The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of social media and the importance of due diligence when engaging in online transactions.
