Paige L. Talley, former office manager at Louisville-based Luvata Electrofin, Inc. (LEI), has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for embezzling $800,000 from her employer.
Talley, 55, of Louisville, pleaded guilty to a single charge of wire fraud on November 24, 2015, in United States District Court. According to testimony during sentencing, Talley admitted to submitting fraudulent travel reimbursement requests and payroll ‘miscellaneous adjustments’ while employed as human resources and office manager at LEI.
The scheme, which spanned from January 2009 to March 2014, involved Talley submitting fraudulent reimbursement requests for bogus travel expenses to LEI, resulting in excessive reimbursements of $800,000. Additionally, between March 2013 and March 2014, Talley entered and submitted fraudulent ‘miscellaneous adjustments’ to LEI payroll checks, resulting in payroll overpayments.
Talley paid $20,000 in restitution during sentencing and was ordered by District Judge Greg N. Stivers to pay the full restitution order of $800,000.
Assistant United States Attorney David Weiser prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the United States Secret Service and the Louisville Metro Police Department.
Talley’s defense team cited her history of being a battered wife of an alcoholic and a gambling addiction as factors contributing to her actions.
The court took these factors into consideration when determining Talley’s sentence, ultimately deciding on 18 months in prison without parole.
