Child Predator Behind Bars
Sioux Falls, SD – A Guatemalan man was sentenced to 46 months in custody for using interstate facilities to transmit information about a minor, a crime that landed him behind bars and stripped him of his freedom.
Jose Joaquin Oxlaj, a 27-year-old man from Guatemala, was arrested on January 11, 2016, after he was caught attempting to meet a 15-year-old girl at a hotel in Sioux Falls. Oxlaj had responded to an advertisement on the Internet website Skout and used his cell phone to send text messages, agreeing to meet the underage girl for sex.
Law enforcement officers were waiting for Oxlaj when he arrived at the hotel and arrested him on the scene. They found him in possession of his cell phone and over $900 in cash, a staggering amount that suggests a despicable intent.
The case was investigated by the South Dakota Internet Crimes Against Children task force, a team of dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to bring predators like Oxlaj to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper prosecuted the case and ensured that Oxlaj faced the full force of the law.
Oxlaj was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 5, 2015, and subsequently pled guilty on October 27, 2015. He was sentenced to 46 months in custody, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Oxlaj is now in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, a fitting end to a man who tried to exploit a vulnerable minor for his own twisted desires. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk online and the importance of protecting our children from predators like Oxlaj.
