Law enforcement officials have foiled a chilling New Year’s Eve terror plot in North Carolina. Christian Sturdivant, 18, from Mint Hill, was arrested and charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS, according to the Justice Department.
The alleged attack involved knives and hammers at a grocery store and a fast food restaurant. The plan was to carry out a mass-casualty event in support of the Islamic State, authorities said.
Sturdivant was caught after law enforcement identified him as an imminent threat. His home contained notes indicating his intent to cause maximum harm and terrorize the nation, Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg of the Justice Department’s National Security Division noted.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi hailed the collaboration between federal and local agencies for preventing a potential disaster. FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the importance of sharing information quickly when threats are identified. “The message from the FBI is clear — anyone who supports ISIS or other terrorist groups cannot hide,” Patel said.
The New York City Police Department, Mint Hill Police Department, and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force played key roles in thwarting the attack. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson praised the efforts of law enforcement during the holiday season, ensuring public safety for Americans celebrating New Year’s Eve.
Special Agent in Charge James C. Barnacle Jr. of the FBI Charlotte Field Office emphasized the agency’s dedication to protecting North Carolina residents. “We will never stop working to hold people accountable who seek to harm and terrorize our community,” Barnacle said.
