Meth Trafficking Ring Busted in Iowa
A 30-year-old woman from Walthill, Nebraska has been sentenced to seven years and three months in federal prison for her role in a massive methamphetamine trafficking operation.
Whitley Mitchell, 30, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine on April 13, 2021. According to court documents, Mitchell and her co-conspirators planned to distribute large quantities of pure methamphetamine, often referred to as ‘ice’ methamphetamine.
On the day of the arrest, authorities discovered a staggering 9.6 grams of pure methamphetamine in Mitchell’s purse. A gun belonging to her co-defendant and passenger was found in the glove box, and an additional 0.09 grams of pure methamphetamine was found on the passenger’s person. The police also uncovered 116.2 grams of pure methamphetamine in a plastic jar and 210.4 grams in individual baggies elsewhere in the car.
Mitchell had prior knowledge of the methamphetamine and planned to benefit from its sale, along with her passenger who had acquired the methamphetamine. This was not her first involvement in methamphetamine distribution, as she had previously held methamphetamine for and been fronted methamphetamine by her passenger.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the 90-month prison sentence, which will be followed by a five-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system, and Mitchell is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until she can be transported to a federal prison.
The investigation was a joint effort by the Tri-State Drug Task Force, consisting of law enforcement personnel from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Sioux City Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, and several other agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Forde Fairchild prosecuted the case.
