OMAHA, NE – Michael Mireles, 31, of Omaha, is headed to federal prison for over eight years after being convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. U.S. Attorney Susan Lehr announced the sentencing on June 20, 2024, bringing a measure of closure to a case that exposed a significant drug operation within the city.
Chief U.S. District Court Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. handed down a 97-month sentence to Mireles, effectively eliminating the possibility of parole. Following his release, Mireles will face a five-year term of supervised release – a period where his movements and activities will be closely monitored by federal authorities.
The bust began on May 19, 2022, when Omaha Police conducted a routine traffic stop in South Omaha. Mireles, identified as a passenger in the vehicle, quickly implicated himself and a South Omaha residence, stating it was under surveillance by gang officers. He chillingly admitted that approximately 5 pounds of methamphetamine and a firearm were stashed inside.
Officers didn’t hesitate. A search warrant was executed on the identified residence that same evening. The search revealed a hidden stash of one pound of meth in a bedroom belonging to codefendant Jose Arevalo-Villalobos. A further search uncovered an additional four pounds of methamphetamine concealed within a storage room. A firearm, later determined to belong to Arevalo-Villalobos, was located in a lockbox in the basement.
Jose Arevalo-Villalobos, already facing justice, received a harsher sentence of 151 months’ imprisonment on January 19, 2024, demonstrating the severity of his involvement in the operation. Investigators believe Arevalo-Villalobos was the primary holder of the weapons and the larger quantity of drugs.
This investigation was a collaborative effort between the Omaha Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, showcasing the power of interagency cooperation in dismantling criminal networks. The Grimy Times will continue to follow federal cases impacting Nebraska and beyond, exposing the dark underbelly of American crime.
